Objectives
This pre-doctoral scholarship/contract aims to support the completion of an interdisciplinary doctoral thesis in neuroscience and other fields of knowledge (human biology, bioethics, psychology, philosophy, physics, or history, for example). Theoretical or empirical projects that propose a genuine dialogue between two or more of these disciplines will be considered, with the aim of improving understanding of the brain, overcoming monodisciplinary paradigms, proposing original responses to the mind-brain problem, discussing and anticipating the main ethical challenges of neuroscience, or addressing specific topics commonly found in interdisciplinary forums, such as consciousness, subjectivity or free will. Thesis projects that clearly and substantively align with the following lines of research will be particularly valued:
Cognition and subjective experience in non-clinical contexts
Cognitive and psychological transformations associated with early and continued exposure to neurotechnologies in non-clinical contexts, including the development of empirical and conceptual methods for their analysis.
Impact of non-clinical use of neurotechnologies on global health
Analysis of the implications of non-clinical use of neurotechnologies on global health, cognitive inequalities and public policy design, including the development of conceptual and methodological tools for their evaluation.
Sociocultural, ethical and institutional dimensions of neurotechnology
Sociocultural, ethical and/or institutional analysis of the integration of neurotechnologies in non-clinical contexts, including their effects on social norms and institutional practices, as well as the role of public discourses, narratives and communicative practices in shaping their social legitimacy and regulation.
Differences between human intelligence and “artificial intelligence”, between the biological and the synthetic
Theoretical, empirical, or mixed methodology research projects that analyse any aspect of the relationship between human beings and the different forms of “artificial intelligence”.
Studies on consciousness
Development of new theories on consciousness and their empirical verification, as well as the development of new experimental paradigms for testing existing models.
Relationship between art and neuroscience
Deeply interdisciplinary projects that, based on philosophical reflection, propose empirical neuroscientific approaches to study aesthetic experience.
In addition to the aforementioned priority areas, any project proposing an empirical neuroscientific application based on philosophical reflection on any aspect of human behaviour will be considered, particularly ethical aspects such as decision-making, the sense of authorship, free will, or habits.
